This ring is a mythical creature with the head of an ape and the tail of a fish. Between its ears, the creature carries an old mine-cut diamond. The head is carved from spotted jasper, a stone that resembles the naturally pigmented skin typical of many apes. The carvings on the ring’s hoop were inspired bt the traditional Māori wood carvings. The ornate fishtail is accentuated by painted gold that fills the deepest reliefs around the ornaments, and it is inlaid with 21K yellow gold plates toward its end. On the inside, the entire ring hoop is lined with a sleeve made of 21K yellow gold. The fishtail ends in a forked fin, set with a drop-shaped rose-cut diamond, upon which the creature rests its head.
